The Newnan High School Science Bowl Team has been an integral part of NHS academia since 1982.  Always representing the school proudly, the team achieved its nadir of performance in 1992 when they finished 4th in the nation at the National Science Bowl held in Washington D.C.  The primary competitions are the sub-regionals and the regionals or state, held in Feb-Mar.  NHS has been admirably represented at these competitions each year, missing the state competition only twice since its inception.

Sponsored by the US Dept. of Energy, the Science Bowl competition is usually conducted in a round-robin format, with the top teams meeting each other in single elimination.  In each competition, two teams of 4 students are challenged to correctly and quickly answer questions in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, General Science, Mathematics, and Physics.  The top 2-4 teams from each sub-region move on to regional/state competition.  Only the state champion is invited to compete in the nationals.

Each year, the elite intelligentsia from the student body are invited to join and compete for a coveted position on the 5-person teams.  Practices are held weekly after school beginning in Sept.  When available, the teams also are involved with local competitions sponsored by different host schools.
